Why this Recession Really Is Different

I was playing around with data on the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ website — economists do stuff like that — and I came across a graph that really drove home the seriousness and severity of the current “Great Recession” much better than any other graphs I’ve seen. Here’s a screenshot the actual graph from the BLS website:

Here are the same numbers re-graphed for clarity:

This makes it clear that the current recession really is different. On a related note, it also shows the business cycle quite clearly.
